Behind the Barrel

Scarcity alone is not enough; a limited run nobody wants still sits still. How demand, cask type, condition and provenance separate the bottles that hold value.

Rye, dry vermouth, lemon and grenadine, shaken hard into a coupe. The original 1920s spec called for Canadian Club, and real pomegranate grenadine is what keeps it from tasting like candy.

The cask decides most of what you taste. Oak species, char depth, and whether it is a first fill or a tired refill tell you what the wood gives back in the glass.

Equal parts Scotch and Italian sweet vermouth with a light hand of Benedictine, stirred 30 seconds and served up. Warm, herbal, and less sweet than it looks.

Global demand in numbers: India leading on volume, Japan climbing fast on value, and what premiumisation means for the whisky market here at home.

Equal parts Scotch, sweet vermouth, Cherry Heering and fresh orange juice, shaken hard and strained into a cold coupe. A blended Scotch keeps the balance honest.

What actually drives value in a bottle, why the Knight Frank numbers cooled after a long run of gains, and what poor storage does to a return.

Two parts Scotch to one of Drambuie, stirred rather than shaken and poured over one big cube. The heather honey rounds out the smoke, and Canadian rye works well here too.

A Manhattan with the whiskey swapped for Scotch. Two parts blended Scotch, one part sweet vermouth, two dashes of bitters, stirred properly and served with a brandied cherry.

Four ingredients and nowhere to hide. Dissolve the sugar completely, use one large cube, and stir for thirty seconds. Those small choices are what separate a good one from a flat one.
